Welcome to crossover season.
Basketball’s regular season is in the home stretch, baseball has begun, and now it’s time for spring football. Ole Miss opened spring drills this week (2:03) and began the process of installing new systems on both sides of the ball. Offensively, new coordinator Rich Rodriguez will emphasize the run game, and he’ll have several options at running back.
On the basketball court, MSU is on a roll (8:00), and coach Ben Howland believes its nine SEC wins are enough to secure a berth in the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs have been winning without Nick Weatherspoon, who remains indefinitely suspended, and Tyson Carter has filled in nicely. Two tough games are coming up, though, with road trips to Auburn and Tennessee.
Speaking of the Volunteers, Ole Miss suffered a heartbreaking loss to the country’s No. 7-ranked team on Wednesday (13:26). The Rebels are 9-6 in SEC play and probably need to get to 10 wins to assure an NCAA bid.
Both baseball teams have started strong. Ole Miss is 5-2 but has experienced a few pitching issues (17:45). This weekend, Long Beach State – which is off to an uncharacteristically bad start – visits Oxford. MSU, meanwhile, is 8-1 after taking two of three from Southern Miss and then earning a pair of blowout midweek wins (22:14). Pitcher Ethan Small is off to a roaring start, and he’ll lead the Bulldogs into this weekend’s Frisco Classic in Texas.
